NEW ORLEANS WASHINGTON DC NEW YORK USA. Very Good. 1911. On offer is a rare and absolutely outstanding train log detailing a nearly 10,000 mile journey around the United States. The log book measures 11 inches by 8 inches and contains 60 typewritten pages. The heavy paper cover has a small tear but otherwise, the journal is in excellent condition. E.M. Martin is the author of the California Conductor's Excursion or A Trip of 9,800 Miles. The journal was written immediately following this 1911 odyssey. In 1911, between May 2nd and June 6th, 110 railroad conductors from California boarded a California Conductors Special and embarked on an epic journey around the United States. The conductors were travelling with their wives, and were members of El Capitan division, No 115, of the Order of Railway Conductors (ORC), a labour union representing train conductors in the United States, their destination was ORC National Convention held in Jacksonville in May 1911. BERLIN GERMANY. Good. 1905. On offer is an interesting original 1905 manuscript diary handwritten by a young woman identified on the inside cover by the initials F.M.B. We believe the 'B' stands for Buettner the surname name of her uncle. Researchers and historians will have many, many clues to use to confirm or deny as she is prodigious mentioning the names of all she comes in contact with. The diary starts off with our author and her friend Gertrude in the States heading to St. Louis through Burlington on board the train. They are heading to New York to catch the ocean liner Kronprinz Wilhelm which takes them to Berlin Germany. The reason our author is heading to Europe is because she is to study, piano we believe, at the famed Stern Conservatory in Berlin under the tutorship of Professor Gustav Hollaender. On offer is a superb manuscript relic of Victorian Era travel detailing a well documented trip by H R H Prince Edward and various dignitaries to India traveling by way of HMS Royal Yacht Serapis. The journal of the trip begins with the author, [we believe to be M. Harwell Royal Marine as was marked the chest from which this manuscript was rescued though we note a later childish hand circa 1900s wrote the name of Kenneth Ellicott among other scribbles and drawings, a later relative we suspect] being based on a hulk in Portsmouth awaiting the ship being prepared for the 9 month voyage. AUBURN NEW YORK NY, 1865. On offer is an interesting, original manuscript letter dated December 16, 1865 Auburn, New York handwritten by J.M. Hammons wherein he describes him work at the state prison, believed to be the Auburn Correctional Facility. Mr. Hammons writes his friend Hosea Edgerly [?] a chatty warm letter describing in short his work overseeing the prisoners in the shoe department, his happiness with the easy work conditions but particularly interesting is Hammons subtle reference to the Civil War, mentioning working for 'Uncle Samuel' in North and South Carolina [in the army] and pondering on how lucky he was to come home safely, stating 'only those who have been soldiers can form a correct idea of what the soldier has to endure.' The author writes of a job opportunity in Detroit but prefers Auburn now feeling like home and he urges his friend to visit and more. Alençon, Normandy, France, 1742. Dated 1742 by notary, M. Laurent Françoise Develoger, (first president of the office of Finance of the generality of Alençon) signs the will and testament of Monsieur Vathoy du Metz, son-in-law of Madame la Comtesse de Bao, who is to be the executor of the last will and testament of Mme Bao. The document is stamped with the blue achival seal of the Order of Malta. It also has at various agreements signatures of all concerned parties. The 4 page document is elegantly and densely written and in good shape save for a tear to the back leave not affect text.. Manuscript. Fair+. Folio - over 12" - 15" tall.

ROSWELL NEW MEXICO. Good+. 1908. On offer are a super group of eight [8] original early 20th Century manuscript diaries handwritten by the young Marjorie Mabie who was born in 1895 and grew up in Roswell New Mexico in the early part of the century. Her family is well noted in local Roswell history having moved from Independence Iowa and once settled in Roswell they owned a number of well-known businesses. Marjorie's father at various times had a number of responsible public positions within the local community. Miss Mabie was an enthusiastic writer, the notebook style diaries are well filled [save for one about 1/3rd full], dated 1908 through 1913. Six of the diaries are all about her life in Roswell but one smallish diary is specific to a 1929 trip to California. Marjorie does a super job detailing her life and times in pre War New Mexico. GUELPH ONTARIO SOUTH WESTERN ONTARIO CANADA. Fair. 1907. On offer is a charming, somewhat sad and enigmatic original manuscript diary handwritten by a young south western Ontario Canada woman named M. S. Walker [b. August 10th 1879] of Guelph, Ontario which in July 1907, the month and year of the diary was a small, but fast growing community of under 15,000 persons. The flip style book begins with a loose page and we note two entries that bring the humanity of the book to light: "Ian Walker Born March 25th 1907 Died March 25th 1907" and then in another hand: "To Mable from Mother May the G…. and Rec….. unite someday in singing the new new song". Then the diary begins in what one would assume was Mable's hand [a later entry refers to "Mable and I" leading us to conclude either Mable gave her sister the book after the death or perhaps both sisters wrote] with her numbered page 1 dated June 22, '07. New York NY San Francisco CA Melbourne AUS. Good. 1862. On offer is an archive of exemplary archive of letters, telegrams, and ephemera by and related to Captain William Augustine Macgill. This archive contains two letters from the early 1860s and the rest of the documents are from the late 1940s, having been put together by R. R. Macgill, obviously a descendent of Captain Macgill. These later documents are testaments to the historical significance of William Macgill, captain of the clipper ship "Sweepstakes." This ship was one of the fastest sailing ships in the world at the time and made the fastest voyage from New York to San Francisco in the entire year of 1856. The letters from the 1940s are responses from various historical societies and museums that Mr. Robert R. Macgill has contacted about his (great?) grandfather. Indiana Territory, IN, 1862. On offer is a handwritten letter dated December 15th, 1862. Penned by William A. Mackenzie writes John Hanna (United States District Attorney at the time); the shocking content outlines the illegal actions of a named captain of Company D, 71st Regiment of the Indiana Infantry. The Captain has been found guilty of swindling the Government by falsifying payrolls and extorting funds from his troops. He goes on to say the community asked Mackenzie to place the matter before Hanna for prosecution using the 'overwhelming evidence.' Slight fault at the fold line otherwise fine.. Manuscript. MacKenzie, rector of Holy Trinity Anglican Church in Chippawa, Ontario, to Mrs. Thompson7 x 4-1/2 inches handwritten note on light green paper. Dated Chippawa, Mar[ch] 23, 1901. Sending along inscription information for tombstones in Chippawa, to Mrs. Thompson. Reverend W. J. MacKenzie was the rector of Holy Trinity Anglican Church Chippawa 1893-1902. SAINT JOHN NEW BRUNSWICK, 1877. On offer is an interesting and significant manuscript letter dated July 7th 1877 Saint John New Brunswick wherein Reverend D.M. Maclise, Pastor of the Calvin Church, writes mere days after the Great Saint John Fire, to the Singer Sewing Company a four [4] page letter imploring them to, like other manufacturers, sell or donate sewing machines as the 'conflagration which has consumed more than half of this city, [leaving] many dressmakers and sewing girls have lost all and thereby deprived of all means of support. A sewing machine to them is indispensible.' He goes on to mention the Chicago company - the leading manufacturer - selling machines at half price. Historians and researchers of the era and New Brunswick will find the letter relates significantly to the social study and class structure prevalent in Saint John of the time. On offer is the original handwritten manuscript 1934 diary authored by Dorothy Mae ["Dodo" or "Dot"] Smith a 17 year old high school in the Eastwood and Syracuse New York areas. She writes about everything - her family, girlfriends, boyfriends, school and daily activities +++. She has a crush on someone named "Al" who plays in a band and obviously is older. Tucked in the diary was a letter from Al in which he refers to an encounter they had during his last visit. Dorothy sends for photos of the popular Radio Stars, worries about her clothes, sneaks cigarettes and writes about it in French. The diary is packed with entries that are long, detailed and well written by a smart emotive young gal. She also names everyone she is in contact with, visitors, teachers etc., and will prove filled with genealogical and historical of the local area. On offer is a very charming pair, 1930 and 1935, of original manuscript relics of Depression era Kentucky handwritten by a sweet 21 year old school girl named Eula Mae Morgan who was born May 24, 1908 and lives in Cropper Kentucky. The 1930 diary is one of young love and the romantic feelings and expressions she pours out her heartfelt feelings and as she contemplates life and her existence. She writes: 'I sometimes don't understand myself - why I feel a thing or do a thing - only I do feel heaps.' She is a very good student, assists in teaching and is active in the Eastern Star and other groups. She is also a super diarist giving a real feel for the times. She notes her classes involve chemistry, testing water, doing her thesis, but on the fun side went to Dr. Pepper opening and she aptly describes the taste. WILMINGTON, CALIFORNIA. Good. 1944. On offer is an interesting diary written during WWII in California. This five-year diary contains 365 pages and is about 10% complete. The diary measures 5.5 inches by 4 inches. The leather cover shows signs of wear but is intact, as are the pages within. The handwriting is in ink and is legible. Stella Mae White was born in Strong, Arkansas in 1913. She was 30 years old when she began this diary in January 1944. She moved to Wilmington, CA in June, 1944 to be near her fiance, Gilbert Salmon. They were married in January, 1945. She and her husband had 2 children. She passed away in June of 1968 at 54 years of age. Her husband passed away six months later. Casual research did not uncover any additional biographical date. There are very few entries for 1944. All of her entries are very brief. She notes on January 1st that Gilbert had called her. Jack Fleming, of Denver Colorado, beginning as early as 1939 through 1947, collects ephemera, broadsides, business cards, photographs and clippings and much, much more nearly filling a lovely large folio sized scrapbook. Jack was a teenage magician using his real name and several stage names, including PEAWADI THE MAGICIAN. Items include letters from local organizations (boys and girls clubs, school events, etc.) thanking him for performing, local news articles about his performances, and much more regarding his own entertaining. From the slingshot of World War I rationing to the exuberant, fashionable, empowering 'Roaring 20s' to her later life as a respectable, conservative '50s housewife. Maisie lives for fashion as even a casual reader notes as she records her school and then work life. The earlier years shows that interest and her travels in fashionable circles evident in the numerous drawings and pencil sketches as she explores couture, hairstyles, and headdress. Dated in London on 9 January [19]01, Wake writes to one Sara Mickle of Toronto, acknowledging on [Field Marshall] Lord [Frederick] Roberts behalf, the receipt of Mickle's letter of December 15th, and the Calendar Mickle sent to Lord Roberts.
