One James Stewart was hanged as an accessory to the killing, and Allan Breck Stewart, accused of the actual murder, escaped to France. Deals with the life and times of one John MacGregor (1873-99) from St Andrews. He served in the Black Watch from 1891 to 98, returning to St Andrews to work as Caddy Master at the R&A, before being recalled for service in the Boer War, where he was killed at Magersfontein in 1899.
