Signed. 8vo.; in the publisher's black cloth binding with dustjacket; xi, [4], 5-347 pages, including the Index; this copy is signed by James Jackson Kilpatrick on the title page.; the dustjacket has rubbing and a scratch to the front panel; it has not been price-clipped.~~The book in which Kilpatrick laid the groundwork for his "states rights" rationale as a defense against the Supreme Court's school desegregation decision in Brown v. Board of Education several years prior. Thus was "Massive Resistance" born.~~In fairness to Mr. Kilpatrick, he later observed, "Probably, looking back, I should have had better consciousness of the immorality, the absolute evil of segretation." {see his obituary in The Washington Post, July 14, 2017"). London: Printed for J. Murray, 1791. First Edition. Full Leather. Very Good binding. An attractive First Edition copy. Robert Jackson was a British army physician in the late 18th century. This work advocated the use of cold affusion, or the application of cold water, for British soldiers stricken by the tropical fevers of Jamaica. The book also has the historical importance of directly aiding him in securing an appointment as surgeon to the 3rd regiment, or Buffs, when war broke out in 1793. As he was not connected with the College of Physicians of London, he was not formally eligible for the office of army physician, only securing it due to the intervention of the Duke of York. "This personal incident was the beginning of Jackson's resolute opposition to the monopoly of the College of Physicians and to the corrupt administration of the old army medical board, which ended in a new regime in 1810, and in an open career from the lowest to the highest ranks of the army medical service" (DNB X, 542).… Read More

A classic example of the Victorian three-volume novel. Near Fine binding.

London: By the Assigns of John Bill, Deceased: And by Henry Hills, and Thomas Newcomb, 1685. Disbound. The first speech of the new King James II to Parliament, on the first day of its meeting. He thanks the Lords and Commons for their support, requests the traditional incomes afforded to the king, and informs them of an outbreak of rebellion in Scotland. This Parliament was initially very loyal to James, granting him much of what he asked for, but he soon used up their goodwill with his pro-Catholic policies, eventually leading to his fleeing the country and Parliament's invitation to William and Mary to ascend the throne. Illustrated with plates depicting such edifying scenes of children bursting into a saloon which a skeleton behind the bar pours daddy some rum. Includes a report to the Lincoln (Neb.) Temperance Society by a chemist on "How Some Liquors Are Made" -- for example, Detwiler's yummy "Black Maria" contains Sugar of lead, eight grains to a quart; as well as strychnine and Brazil-wood. In the publisher's brown decorated cloth binding with some silverfishing to boards and spine. The front hinge is cracked but holding. Very Good binding.

Very Good binding. 24mo.; disbound sewn pamphlet; 47 pages, [48] being a list of Dr. Culverwell's works [including (charmingly) his works "For Closet Reading" such as "Institutes of Marriage" and "The Physiology of the Passions"]. ~~Robert James Culverwell was a prolific author of books on the marriage science, many of which are included in the Atwater bibliography. Unaccountably, this rather shorter treatise didn't make the cut. Very Good binding.

He finally gets it, and promptly dies.~~We have not located any copies on OCLC.~~. Very Good binding.
