The first wave of Indian immigrants arrived in South Africa as indentured labourers, followed by a second wave known as Passenger Indians - individuals who had paid their own fare. Being the last wave of immigrants to enter a British colony, the Indians saw themselves, and were perceived by others, as a homogeneous group originating from India. The apartheid state as well as anti-apartheid organisations saw advantages in this. Author analyses this construct and shows how Indian identity is being transformed to meet the challenges of the new democratic South Africa.

External Mission is the first study of the ANC's period in exile, based on a full range of sources in southern Africa and Europe. These include the ANC's own archives and also those of the Stasi, the East German ministry that trained the ANC's security personnel. It reveals that the decision to create the Umkhonto we Sizwe (Spear of the Nation) guerrilla army, which later became the ANC's armed wing, was made not by the ANC but by its allies in the South African Communist Party after negotiations with Chinese leader Mao Zedong. Riemvasmaak was one of the earliest scenes of forced removal under the apartheid government's black spot clearance programme. The Xhosa inhabitants were removed to the Ciskei in 1973 and the others to Namibia in 1974. The new democratic government made them the beneficiaries of the first resettlement project with varying degrees of success and satisfaction.

Their ship, the barque "Cuba", was wrecked 4 miles from Port Elizabeth. William Rabone's diary of the voyage is here followed with the letters written by his wife Harriet (nee Essex) to her friend in London giving a vivid description of life in a small South African town at that time. Spans the years 1851 to 1890.
