Description:
Kwela / South African History Online 2001.. Owners inscription ffep. VG+ condition.. 214pp sofcover 8vo. The first wave of Indian immigrants arrived in South Africa as indentured labourers, followed by a second wave known as Passenger Indians - individuals who had paid their own fare. Being the last wave of immigrants to enter a British colony, the Indians saw themselves, and were perceived by others, as a homogeneous group originating from India. The apartheid state as well as anti-apartheid organisations saw advantages in this. Author analyses this construct and shows how Indian identity is being transformed to meet the challenges of the new democratic South Africa.

Description:
Jonathan Ball. Johannesburg 2012 1st edition thus.. No inscription. edges tanned hence VG+ condition.. 384pp illustrated large format paperback. External Mission is the first study of the ANC's period in exile, based on a full range of sources in southern Africa and Europe. These include the ANC's own archives and also those of the Stasi, the East German ministry that trained the ANC's security personnel. It reveals that the decision to create the Umkhonto we Sizwe (Spear of the Nation) guerrilla army, which later became the ANC's armed wing, was made not by the ANC but by its allies in the South African Communist Party after negotiations with Chinese leader Mao Zedong. Author shows that many of the strategic decisions made, and many of the political issues that arose during the course of that protracted armed struggle had a lasting effect on South Africa, shaping its society even up to the present day.

Oxford University Press 1990.. No inscriptions. 4 square corners, a VG+ copy in matching dustwrapper.. Black cloth boards. 634pp 8vo 1.1kg. First published in 1936, this now-classic volume spans a time of rapid and far-reaching change in England--from Gladstone's first ministry, through the great contest with Disraeli, the Home Rule debate, the establishment of the Labour moverment, the Boer War, and the Liberal reforms of 1909-10, to the end of an era marked by the catastrophe of 1914. With stimulating analyses of social and economic developments as well as domestic and foreign policy, Ensor's account serves as a superb introduction to the period it covers and offers insight into the world of the 1930s in which it was written.
