Description:
London: George Allen, 1911. First. Hardcover. Boards are excellent and the book is overall VG+./None. Number 13 in the series, The American War of Secession. The series was provided to Royal Army officers in preparation for their competency tests. Without bias or bitterness often found in the narratives written by American participants. Very detailed and well organized. Errata sheet tipped in. Book has the required 16 maps and all are in near fine condition. Housed in a back pocket. This the "expensive one" of the series, suspect this due to the subjects. Contains a tipped in presentation sheet as a prize to a student in science.

Description:
Richmond, VA: Confederate States of America, Navy Department, 1863. First. None. See photos. Near Fine. Faint Confederate Archives stamp./None. CONFEDERATE IMPRINT. Parrish & Willingham 2335. A report from Colonel Imboden who was stationed in VA and what was to become WVA. Tells of an incident whereas a Confederate was threatened by General Milroy, USA, with his life for guerrilla activity and Milroy demanded $14.72 in damages!!!. Imboden states this is not uncommon, but strange it deserves Davis' attention. The Federals meant business in dealing with this "guerrilla warfare." For the $14.72 the citizen was putting his home and life on line. Noncompliance would result in his home being burned and himself shot! Imboden made general while serving mostly in the Valley area. He last commanded an irregular cavalry unit.

Description:
Richmond, VA: Confederate States of America, Navy Department, 1865. First. None. VG+. Not disbound, a stand alone publication. No covers. See Pictures. 12 pages./None.. CONFEDERATE IMPRINT. Parrish & Willingham 1684. Multiple communications by the Secretary of the Navy Mallory and Governor Vance of North Carolina concerning the supposed stealing of the Welsh coal meant for the steamer Advance by Confederate Navy personnel. This forced the Advance (ship belonging to North Carolina) to fuel with substandard North Carolina coal which caused her be captured by the Federals because her capabilities were halved. Seems there could be better things to argue about this late in the War. However, there are tabulations in the letter detailing the prizes captured in 1864 by the Confederate steamers Tallahassee and Chickamauga. The Tallahassee was a very successful steamer that year. She burnt 16 and scuttled another 10 vessels.

NY: Van Nostrand, 1863. Stated second Edition of 1863. Replaced the red leather spine with like leather and added period endpapers. A very handsome manual!/No Jacket.. EXTREMELY RARE WAR DATED ARMY MANUAL. Covers pontoons, sieges, sapping, mining, batteries. Many illustrations, no foldouts. SIGNED by Charles N. Kent in 1863, may be a soldier. Engineering troops were invaluable, but they got little attention in later narratives. An example of their incredible work was the rapid movement of Sherman's Army through the swamps of Northeast Georgia and South Carolina on his way to Columbia.

Cincinnati: Miami Printing and Publishing, 1867. First. Hard Cover. As good as I have seen, but never saw one in excellent condition. Book has had professional restoration making it tight and square. New endpapers. Spine lettering faded. In its original green cloth binding./None.. General Duke's most noted service in the war was as second-in-command for his brother-in-law John Hunt Morgan. Duke would later write a popular account of Morgan's most famous raid: 1863's Morgan's Raid and also an excellent autobiography. He took over Morgan's command after Morgan was shot by Union soldiers in 1864. At the end of the war, Duke was among Confederate President Jefferson Davis's bodyguards after his flight from Richmond. There is no better account of Morgan than this lengthy narrative. Nevins I-83. Dornbusch III-1229. Howes 548. THIS WAS HISTORIAN BELL WILEY'S COPY AS HIS SIGNATURE IS ON A FRONT FLYLEAF.
