Description:
Good+. 1815. On offer is a fascinating, historically significant journal handwriten by Joel Cadbury, on his journey to post War of 1812 America. The journal sees Cadbury travel from England to the United States, travel south to Washington D.C. discussing many of the prescient questions of the early 1800s in America, including seeing the U.S. Senate debate the 'Missouri Question'. He travels to Virginia, where he sees and is disgusted with the state of slavery and African-Americans on plantations. He visits Mount Vernon and George Washington's tomb, and meets, by chance, the Vice President of the United States, Daniel D. Tompkins. While the cover of the journal says "Joel Cadbury's Account of his Voyages to and From American and from its shore from 1815 to 1820," the years of 1815 appear to have been cut out of the book. 4 pages are missing from the very beginning, and the journal's first entry is in 1816. The journal begins with Cadbury's journey on the… Read More

Girard, Pennsylvania Penn PA. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1936-1940. Hardcover. On offer is the Five Year "A Line A Day" diary of Mrs. Elizabeth Strobel Calaway (1889-1983) from Girard, Pennsylvania. Calaway was a teacher and she wrote religiously and extensively from 1936-1940, when she was aged 47 through 51. Elizabeth was married to George Arthur Calaway [sometimes Caloway], who worked as a contractor. They had one child, Alice Calaway (1916-2010). Elizabeth’s diary demonstrates the unbelievable (and sometimes unbearable) burden on a middle class working woman in 1930s America. Each morning she was up and off to work at her job as a teacher, walking in all weather. When not at work she was supporting her adult daughter, Alice, who still lived at home, and her husband, whose health was always tenuous. She was also volunteering for the Church, sewing and crocheting, attending events at the IOOF (International Order of Odd Fellows) , playing games with friends (the game… Read More

SIERRA MADRE CALIFORNIA CA. Good+. 1968. On offer is the interesting, original 1943 manuscript diary of Maybelle Caley Barker. A treasure trove of narrative making for a fascinating look at gender or women's' issues and the changing roles and perceptions of women in the mid-20th Century, a time of unprecedented change and the backdrop of a world at war. For a social historian, the diary opens a window of insight into the issues she thought were important and worthy of commenting upon. She didn't shy away from social issues either; although how she tempered her actions reflected a wider social view of women in society. When a male friend published an article in a local newspaper critical of women, she joined other women in writing letter of complaint we girls are writing Stan "letters of protest re his column sending them from other towns under assumed names .....
