(Charles Buckles) Falls, particularly famous for his World War I poster art, created this book in 1923 for his daughter, and it has been in and out of print ever since. This particular copy is one of the last publications of Morrow Junior Books, one of the oldest imprints of children's books that disappeared when it was subsumed into HarperCollins in 1999. However, parents and critics have known from the first that Falls had created something unique. His woodcuts use animals to represent the different letters of the alphabet, with bright blue, green, orange, and yellow backgrounds that were markedly different from other artists of his day, who tended to stick to dull earth tones. Washington: Library of Congress, 1992. Softcover. New. Rare in new condition. Claire Badaracco describes the history of the R.R. Donnelley Four American Books Campaign in the late 1920s. The campaign hoped to promote perceptions of American excellence in the printing of fine books, and it commissioned illustrators to select volumes to illustrate. The four books chosen were Moby Dick, Two Years Before the Mast, Walden, and The Tales of Edgar Allen Poe. The Bibliographical Society of America review writes, "Badaracco, who has had access to the Donnelley records and correspondence files, has traced the history of the campaign in admirable detail, providing a concise history of the venture and giving, in the process, useful thumbnail sketches of the persons who conceived and executed the books." Published by the Library of Congress Center for the Book, whose purpose is to promote books and literature. Includes illustrations from the published volumes as well as historical images.

Barbara Gibbs Ostmann and Jane Baker edited a whole series of "favorites" cookbooks in the 1980s and 1990s, drawing on recipes contributed by newspaper food writers and editors from around the country. This particular cookbook, specializing in cookies, was a special edition created in 1991 to benefit MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving). There are 116 recipes, roughly one to a page, organized by familiar categories (bar cookies, drop cookies, etc.) and well-written. There is an index at the end and several prefaces, including one about the contributors and one with helpful tips about baking and storing cookies, but the longest and most detailed is, true to the book's origins, about MADD-it's history, goals, and programs. A much-beloved children's book with text in both English and Chinese. Lovely color illustrations. The book tells the story of Lao Lao, a woman renowned for her skill in traditional Chinese paper cutting. Lao Lao is locked away by the emperor in hopes that she will make jewels for him out of paper, but she is rescued by the Ice Dragon and becomes free to share her beautiful paper cuts with everyone. The last pages of the book also feature templates for children to make their own paper cuts.

We strongly recommend this cookbook - an IACP cookbook award winner that includes over 2,000 vegetarian recipes of every ilk. Mark Bittman's original How To Cook Everything was described by the Washington Post as "a more hip Joy of Cooking," and this offering is very much in the same vein. All recipes are vegetarian, but they are also appealing, with such dishes as Pearl Couscous Gratin with Pesto and Goat Cheese, Swiss-Style Cheese Bake, and Espresso Black Bean Chili. In addition to his skills in explaining basic techniques and 250 how-to illustrations, Bittman has also included other features such as menus for different occasions compiled from the book's recipes, informative charts on various ingredients, and variations accompanying each recipe.

We knew nothing of its true story - Squanto is a native American who was friendly with the English explorers but was later captured and sold as a slave in Spain. He made his way to England, learned the language, and was later able to return to his home as a guide and translator for the English settlers. Every other page in the book is a colorful, handsome full-page illustration. This book is recommended for ages 6-12, but honestly, we think adults will also find this book educational and interesting, as we did - it does not read solely as a children's book. Written years after the studio's closing, this book recounts the Republic story by highlighting its films' leading ladies, including Barbara Stanwyck, Maureen O'Hara, Ethel Barrymore, and Rita Hayworth.
