Pan, London, 1956. Reprint. Softcover. Good Condition. List of illustrations in photograve, preface and introduction by author stop between pages 136 and 137 there are 14 pages of photography stop colour photographic paperback binding with black coloured titles to the front panel and white coloured titles to the back strip. Heinrich Harrer, already a famous mountaineer and Olympic ski champion, was caught by the outbreak of World War II while climbing the Himalyas. Being an Austrian, he was interned in India. On his third attempt, he succeeded in escaping from the internment camp and fled into Tibet. After a series of experiences in a country never crossed before by a Westerner, Harrer reached the Forbidden City of Lhasa. He stayed there for seven years, learned the language and acquired a greater understanding of Tibet and the Tibetans. Illustrator: Photographic. 900 g; XIV, 442, 8, & VIII, 450, 8 pages, in 2 volumes both with blind stamped decoration to the top left of the front panel and gilt titling to the front panel and the spine. There are 4 photographs in each volume and occasional decoration. Traces of foxing to the preliminary few pages of volume 2. Both volumes front edges are untrimmed, as are the bottom edges. These 2 volumes were marketed for sale only in India and the British colonies. There is a ownership inscription on the half title page of volume 1.
