Three solidly-bound volumes in red cloth which is worn and stained in places, all spines discoloured, spine ends and corners bumped and frayed, spine of vol. 1 has a 1.5 inch tear to the cloth, inexpertly repaired, dust and soiling to edges, flourishing ink signatures to the yellow-sided prelim of each volume (Charles B Jago or Iago!?), vol. 1 has an ink inscription to verso of frontispiece portrait of Shakespeare, and shows through at the front; delightful plates by Kenny Meadows, some dated 1845, must have been originally published separately before being bound in, and all have a rounded waterstain to top or bottom margin, and are browned to the edges; many equally delightful black and white illustrations in the text; pages generally in good plus condition, with some browning, particularly those opposite the plates which have offset marginal discolouring; text in double-columns. The original green bevelled-edged boards are worn and frayed, gilt lettering and decoration to front and spine, page block has become detached and is loosely inserted between the boards. Front brown endpapers creased and torn; 8 of the superb Dore illustrations remain (the frontispiece 'The Body of Elaine on its way to King Arthur's Palace' has been removed). Volume One only, with the aquatints drawn and etched by Pyne, aquatinted by J Hill, oblong folio, ex-Cheltenham library re-bound in creamy yellow cloth (worn and marked in places), titles and library number in gilt to spine, new endpapers, library sticker ('not for loan') and barcode to first free new endpaper, small circular library stamp to the front of all plates at the edge, not affecting the illustrations, title page has been trimmed and affixed to the verso of the first plate (which has also been trimmed and reattached, with a library stamp and ink references to the left of the plate, not much affecting it). Boards are slightly marked, browned and bumped, slight rubbing/wear to spine ends and corners, spine ends a little soiled and stained, small split/strain to stitching at top opposite title page, pages rough-trimmed and foxed/browned to edges, blobs of foxing within, more marked to prelims and endpapers, final 14 pages and rear endpapers have a pale oval waterstain (affecting neither text nor drawings) reflected in browning and wrinkling to rear pastedown and exterior of rear board.
