The author served in the 6th (Rifle) Battalion, Kings Liverpool Regiment from 1914 onwards, serving in Belgium and France in 1915-17 before being invalided Home. The diaries were never published, but he thought of doing so in the late 1920s, and wrote to many people asking whether or not to do so. These letters are also printed in the book.
