But otherwise a good clean tight copy of this larger, hard-cover book (11.5'' high by 10'' across). The authors' account of their life living for five years year-round on the sub-antarctic island of South Georgia. They were the curators of the Whaling Museum at Grytviken but travelled all over the island, and all round it on their yacht ''Curlew''. Number 1 in the publisher's Monograph Series, this book looks at the Beechey and Belcher collections of Eskimo artifacts (hunting and fishing items mostly) acquired by Captain Beechey and Lieutenant Belcher of HMS Blossom from Natives in northern Alaska in 1826-27. 139pp, b&w illustration throughout.. Originally published in France in 1955 as "Kerguelen. Connaissance du Monde", and in English in 1956 as "The Lonely South" translated by Richard Graves, this is a slightly later Travel Book Club edition. The author's account of his time on Kerguelen Island where he served as a doctor with the French scientific mission there in 1952-53, though spent most of his time studying the local wildlife.
