Mortal Gods: Science, Politics, and the Humanist Ambitions of Thomas Hobbes

By Miller, Ted H.

Penn State University Press. Paperback. 338pp. According to the commonly accepted view, Thomas Hobbes began his intellectual career as a humanist, but his discovery, in midlife, of the wonders of geometry initiated a critical transition from humanism to the scientific study of politics. In Mortal Gods, Ted Miller radically revises this view, arguing that Hobbes never ceased to be a humanist. Miller's work is a fundamental recasting of Hobbes's project, a recontextualization of his thought within early modern humanist pedagogy and the court culture of the Stuart regimes. Very clean and neat. Very good copy . Hardback. 2011.

Marriage, two volumes complete

By Ferrier, Susan

Richard Bentley. Hardback. 344pp+324pp. Novel. Half bound in red leather with red, blue and yellow marbled papers on boards and matching marbled endpapers. Raised bands to spines with two maroon leather labels and gilt titles to each volume. Gilt to top edge. Also includes substantial essay, 38pp., on Ferrier, and Ferrier's Recollections of visits to Ashestiel and Abbotsford (home of Sir Walter Scott). Anote on the text: "Miss Ferrier's novels have, since their first appearance, suffered curtailment in all subsequent editions. The present edition is the first reprint since from the original editions, and contains the whole of the omissions in other reprints." attributed to GB, New Burlington Street, presumably George Bentley son of the publishing founder, and subsequent partner. Binding is presumed slightly later than the contents. Maroon labels are perhaps from an earlier binding. Title label to volume II has suffered some loss though the word Marriage is unaffected. The title label is neat and complete to volume I and the author label is complete to both volumes. Previous owner's label stating A. T. Lloyd to both volumes' endpapers. there is a tiny nick to the head of the front spine hinge to volume I. Some light foxing to prelims but title pages and text blocks are clean to both volumes. Binding is sound. An attractive set with unusually bright papers to boards and neat, tight bindings. Very good set . Hardback. 1892.
