Hardcover. 65p. followed by 95 "figures", i.e. plates, usually one fullpage figure each, one color image set as the frontispiece, the b&w reproduced clearly (at best) accompanied by a few diagrammatic images. Description:
London: Weidenfeld & Nicolson, 1960. Hardcover. 335p., first edition in very good shape; hardbound in 8x5 inch cafe-au-lait boards gilt and enclosed in the perfectly intact dust jacket. Fore-edge bears a sprinkle of foxing, endsheets slightly toned near jacket flaps. Crisply sound, square, clean -and unmarked, except for the author's autograph inscribed in ink slantwise across the title page. Set in England and Wales. The dust jacket blurb states that "Californian echoes" are at work in the novel (Barbary Coast in our city means gold-rush Frisco decadence), but perhaps these echoes are in the blurbist's mind only, we see none skimming the text. "'Booksellers' inevitable dislike of second novels is a rule,' writes Michael Lewis, himself once a bookseller. With Barbary Coast he looks like proving the exception.
