Numerous engravings including 8 plates on tinted paper. Original burgundy leather boards with elaborate scrolled design front, back and spine with gilt design and titles front and spine; all edges gilt, grey endpapers. An occasional tiny foxing mark and otherwise contents in fine condition without marks, tears or folds. Binding is tight and square. Very light rubbing to corner and spine edges with gilt remaining fine and bright. A beautiful copy.
James Greenwood (1832–1929) was a notable Victorian journalist, social commentator and novelist. Percy Francis Westerman (1876 - 1959) was a prolific author of children's literature, many of his books are adventures with military themes. His first book for boys, 'A Lad of Grit', was published in 1908. In the same year, Baden-Powell founded the Scouting movement, which strongly influenced many of Westerman's books - he was a particularly keen supporter of the Sea Scouts.

John Finnemore. John Finnemore (1863-1915) was a British school teacher and writer of fictional novels and history and geography texts. He is best remembered for his books about Teddy Lester and his friends at Slapton, a fictitious English public school. Finnemore was also a writer of early Boy Scout fiction.

An adventure story of the Great Britain Army Colonial forces in South Africa. George Manville Fenn (1831-1909) was a prolific English novelist, journalist, editor and educationalist. William Henry Charles Groome (1854-1913) was one of the most prolific children's book illustrators of his era, while also being a highly skilled and respected watercolour artist.
