Dunkirk: The History Behind the Major Motion Picture

By Levine, Joshua

Dunkirk: The History Behind the Major Motion Picture. Levine, Joshua. Published by William Morrow. Softcover. 354 pages with photographic sections. In fine condition without marks, tears or folds. In 1940, the Allies had been beaten back by the Nazis across France to the northern port of Dunkirk. In the ultimate race against time, more than 300,000 Allied soldiers were daringly evacuated across the Channel. This moment of German aggression was used by Winston Churchill as a call to Franklin Roosevelt to enter the war. Now, Joshua Levine, the film's official historian, explores the real lives of those soldiers, bombed and strafed on the beaches for days on end, without food or ammunition; the civilians whose boats were overloaded; the airmen who risked their lives to buy their companions on the ground precious time; and those who did not escape.

World Stages, Local Audiences: Essays on Performance, Place and Politics,

By Peter Dickinson

World Stages, Local Audiences: Essays on Performance, Place and Politics, Peter Dickinson. Published by Manchester University Press, 2010. 8vo up to 9½" tall. 272 pages including index, bibliography and 24 pictures. Black cloth boards, silver spine titles. Very light shelf wear to jacket; volume pristine and unread. In World Stages, Dickinson suggests that the forms of intimacy and identification that come from being part of the public of a local performance, provide a potential model for rethinking our roles as world citizens. Using his own experience of recent theatrical practice in Vancouver as a starting point, Dickinson maps the spaces of connection and contestation, the flows of sentiment and social responsibility, produced by different communities in response to global sports spectacles. He also analyses how such topics are taken up in the work of playwrights, conceptual, installation, and performance artists like Ai Weiwei, and Rebecca Belmore. In so doing, Dickinson makes an original contribution to the emerging discourse on live art and livability by examining not only the geographical and historical affiliations between different sites of performance, but also the - at times - radical new social bonds created by audiences witness to those performances.
