New York: Durell, 1824. Hardcover. Very Good. Plates (22) by R. Smirke engraved by Neagle. Three Volumes later tree calf with red spine labels gilt marbled boards (tips slightly rubbed) 316pp 308pp 304pp some uneven foxing and two leaves where something laid in has left its outline area browned. A few plates offset onto text page opposite still a very neat copy of this favored Smollet translation with plates after Smirke's paintings.

[London acc. to Wing]: Publisher not identified, 1673. Hardcover. Good. Octavo (165x105mm) in darkened calf-covered boards, neatly repaired, with remnants of original spine leather, [viii]+310pp+[2]pp blank. Titlepage missing upper right corner but text not affected, staining to lower edge throughout but not affecting text. Ink ownership dated 1750/1 at top of titlepage, another ("Catherine Sponer") on verso of final blank. Fore-edge staining/soiling, mainly to beginning and end, expecially in bottom left hand corner, but not affecting readability. Corners rounded but with good margins throughout. *Peter Walsh was born in County Kildare. He was guardian of the Franciscan friary at Kilkenny 1648-1650, and then served as chaplain to Castlehaven�s army in Munster. All Catholic clergy captured by the Cromwellians were executed and Walsh, in danger of death, fled Ireland, eventually to London where he lived obscurely until the Restoration. Octavo cloth-spined speckled covers [xvi] +518pp +[2]pp gathering X scrambled but complete. First two leaves repaired to margin without loss to print. Damp tide mark to some margins not affecting readability, paper not softened or damaged. Main items in this volume are Typhon, translations of Virgil's Aeneid Books 1-2 and Bucolics and Lucian's Tymon into Dutch. *Willem Godschalck van Focquenbroch was a Dutch poet and playwright. Aside from satirical and burlesque plays and poetry, he also wrote more serious works in a Petrarchic tradition (Wikipedia).

All the illustrations are clean, bright and in fine chromolithography. Only the fore-edge has some pale foxing with the plates and text pages clean and all tightly attached to the binding. A V.G+ copy in a very pretty binding in bright fine condition.

Folio rolled pig on 5 raised spine bands lacking ties [some scrapes to one cover, spine and lower cover in very good condition] All Edges Blue dyed. [8pp =titlepage + dedication + Prefaces etc] +427pp +[1p=blank] + [18pp=index] + colophon. Vol.II 187pp which includes titlepage. Text and side notes in Latin in italics.A few gatherings with pale foxing, last 2 leaves sl.creased but all pages well bound in,no tears, no marking. Fine binding in excellent condition.

Library stamp on back of Titlepage but no other library marks, one marginal tear and slight browning to paper are the only signs of use. *Begins with President Monroe's message to both houses of Congress on Dec 1819 which seems to be the verbatim text (enclosed in repeated quotation marks) dealing with the broken treaty with Spain, the monetary problems encountered, costal survey and naval enlargement and increase in piracy as well as the death of Commodore Perry. Among scientific inventions Capt. Marryat's Life Boat, New barometers, safer coaches etc. as well as many patents described. Memoir of Sir Joseph Banks & others.

Two Parts in One volume octavo newer brown pebbled library cloth viii +455pp +385pp (Chronicle) +index. *Historical events of 1836 in 8 chapters then Ireland, France, Spain, Germany & Switzerland, Greece and United States & Mexico & S. America with a chapter including events such as the Texan revolt aided by the United States, several balloon ascents, events in Upper and Lower Canada, War in America with several Indian tribes, abolition of slavery opposed by Congress etc.

London: For the author sold by Weale & Pickering, 1844. Hardcover. Fair. Plates (15). . Folio green blindstamped and gilt lettered cloth (soiled worn and covers detached and lacking spine) 16pp +plates. Subscriber's list. *The house is mentioned in Shakespeare's Richard the Third, and the dramatist in fact lived near by. It was bought by Sir Thomas More although at the time of his martyrdom he had moved to Chelsea but later his relations William Roper and Rastell leased it. In later years it was used as a warehouse and the throne room became storage space. Some dusty fingering, some foxing & browning & even a few marginal tears but quite a scarce book and still tight and worthy of rebinding. Much research on the remnants of early traces and the Shakespeare connection make this a desirable and scarce item.

Small quarto in recent grey card covers, frontis + title + 45pp. Upper margin of titlepage repaired where part of name cut away, frontis and last leaf mounted, 3 leaves cut short at fore-edge without loss of text. *The first of two political satires published anonymously by Bramston, a Sussex clergyman, which "hold an honourable place in 18th-century verse, [and] abound with contemporary references, and frequently happy lines" (DNB article James Bramston - see too D.F. Foxon, English Verse 1701-1750, B386).
