About This Item

London: Vol I J. and J. Knapton & 9 others, Vols II-IV J. Darby & 8 others., 1731, 1726, 1727, 1727. Hardcover. Good. Copperplate portraits of the monarchs (19) by VanderGucht.. Four volumes worn half calf with 2 of 4 spine labels (3 covers detached/wear to corners and hinges). Vol I xvi +400 +[36]pp index (Henry I to accession of Richard II); Vol II 427 +[28]pp index (Richard II to Edward IV); Vol III 420 +40pp index (Edward V to Queen Mary); Vol IV 542 +34pp index + 22pp separate index to the Appendix (Elizabeth to death of James I plus a long Appendix pp322-542). Gathering 7R is a single leaf but page number & catchword are correct. In Vol IV the final gathering of the Appendix is in 3 with THE END so there is a blank missing, the index starts a new gathering. The Portrait of Queen Elizabeth at the beginning of Vol I should probably be at the start of the last volume. *These volumes contain primary sources for the history of England and have printed marginal dates & notes as well as explanatory footnotes. They all come from the Advocates Library with engraved label to pastedown, neat oval stamp and donor's inscription "Caroli Winchester 1859" to fly leaf & a single oval stamp to blank verso of each titlepage. Some sporadic foxing to a few gatherings but else all clean, crisp and tight inside.
