Albert Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770-1844) was a Danish / Icelandic sculptor and artist. Thorvaldsen was an outstanding representative of the Neoclassical period in art, becoming the foremost artist in the field after the death of Antonio Canova in 1822. The poses and expressions of his figures are considered much more stiff and formal than those of Canova's. Thorvaldsen embodied the style of classical Greek art more than the Italian artist, he believed that only through the imitation of classical art pieces, could one become a truly great artist. Complete with 150 full page engraved plates, additional 2 full page plates, not in index, 2 engraved title pages, plus printed titles, each plate with occompanying text. Bound in modern half calf, calf corners, marble boards, raised bands, ornate gilt tooling within compartments, full gilt edges, marble endpapers. Both bindings in very good clean firm condition. Internally, persistant light to moderate staining or fox spotting, occasinally heavier. Text and plates in good condition. A good copy, in very attractive solid bindings. . Half-Leather. Folio - over 12" - 15" tall.

The 1830 1st edition, complete in 2 volumes, of this sweeping catalogue of engraved illustrations --and desciptions-- of the historic collections of ancient armor built by Dr. Samuel Rush Meyrick (1783-1948). Both volumes imposing elephant folios, handsome in their 1/2 leather over rich, marbled boards. The contemporary-to-the-period, mid-19th century binding includes 5 raised bands and fine, intricate gilt-tooling within the compartments along each spine. Very light scuffing to several of the panel edges, still though attractive and very presentable. And internally, clean and solid, with light, forgiveable foxing to a number of the plates but no soiling along the text to speak of. All edges bright gilt. 73 plates to Vol. I, an additional 77 plates to Vol. II, making this one of the great early 19th century visual documents of its kind.

Bound in full brown leather boards, five raised bands along spines, gilt lettering along spines with red and green title boxes, orante border design along front and rear covers, marbled inside covers and endpapers. Ex-Library, with embossed library stamps, card catalog, etc. Previous owner's bookplate adhered to inside front cover of both volumes. Shelfwear: light scuffing along edges and covers, water damage on front covers and spines of both volumes, foxing and tanning on page leafs, some pencil notation throughout. Both volumes are tightly bound. Set is in Very Good condition..

Joseph Skelton, Oxford, England, 1830. First edition, two volumes. Full leather with gilt decoration around edges and on spine, five raised bands, marbled endpapers. Originally owned by Thomas M. Lowndes, his bookplate is on inside front cover. Some mild rubbing wear along edges, light scratching to top and bottom gilt page edges. Light foxing inside, pages clean. There are 73 plates in Volume I and 77 plates in Volume II. These volumes have been in the same family for three generations. Additional photos available upon request. Rare in this condition and binding.

Collection of satirical plates and illustrated poems related to Het groote tafereel der dwaasheid, a famous collection of texts and plates satirizing the Englishman John Law, his Mississippi Company, and the international land and trading speculation in worthless shares, known as the South Sea Bubble of 1719-1720, which resulted in an international scandal.
