About This Item
Oxford, England: Joseph Skelton, 1830. 1/4 leather. Very Good +. The 1830 1st edition, complete in 2 volumes, of this sweeping catalogue of engraved illustrations --and desciptions-- of the historic collections of ancient armor built by Dr. Samuel Rush Meyrick (1783-1948). Both volumes imposing elephant folios, handsome in their 1/2 leather over rich, marbled boards. The contemporary-to-the-period, mid-19th century binding includes 5 raised bands and fine, intricate gilt-tooling within the compartments along each spine. Very light scuffing to several of the panel edges, still though attractive and very presentable. And internally, clean and solid, with light, forgiveable foxing to a number of the plates but no soiling along the text to speak of. All edges bright gilt. 73 plates to Vol. I, an additional 77 plates to Vol. II, making this one of the great early 19th century visual documents of its kind.
