Good. 16mo; 31, 89, 34 pages, full calf, extra-gilt spine, covers and spine very rubbed, marbled endpapers Tansillo was a highly respected poet and sonnetteer by his contemporaries, and arguably a better lyrical poet than Petrarch himself. But, rather few of his writings appeared in his lifetime, and not a few of them were put on the Index Expurgatorius by Pope Pius IV. This text, LA BALIA, was translated from the Italian by William Roscoe, based in the iItalian edition edited by Giovanni Antonia Ranza: Ranza is credited with most of the "Notes" in the final section. Roscoe contributed an Introduction, a sonnet, and a closing poem, "Inscription". This bi-lingual edition has the texts on facing pages. The poem has parallel Italian and English texts. The work is in three parts: the life of Tansillo, 'The nurse' and 'Notes' on The nurse, each with its own pagination. The register is continuous. Contemporary tree calf, somewhat worn. With an engraved title-page, woodcut engravings before each canto (2), one at the head of the Inscription, and a small tailpiece afterwards. These have been attributed to Thomas Bewick by some, but are more likely by Bewick's apprentice, Henry Hole. ESTC T97230.

Second edition. Dual Italian and English text. Luigi Tansillo (1510 - 1568) was an Italian poet of the Petrarchian school. Born in Venosa, he entered the service of Pedro Álvarez de Toledo in 1536 and in 1540 entered the Accademia degli Umidi, afterwards called della Fiorentina. William Roscoe (1753 - 1831), was an English historian and miscellaneous writer. With an ink inscription to front blank. In a half morocco binding with marbled paper covered boards. Externally, generally sound but with some wear to extremities and rubbing to boards and marks to boards. Front joint starting slightly. Internally, generally firmly bound. Bright but with occasional scattered spotting and handling marks and the odd slight closed tear. Good Only

The Nurse, a long form poem by Luigi Tansillo (1510-1568), Italian poet of the Petrarchian school, encouraged the Early Modern European woman to suckle her own children for the benefit of both parties' health and emotional well-being. The translator, historian William Roscoe (1753-1831), refers to the piece as 'the work of one of the brightest wits in that constellation of Genius which appeared in Italy in the sixteenth century, and which yet diffuses a permanent light over the horizon of literature.'
