Description:
SENDAK (Maurice) [1928–2012]
Where the Wild Things Are
New York: Harper & Row, 1963
Presentation copy, Inscribed with drawing of "Max" in his wolf suit:
"For Hilary Knight" signed and dated "Dec. '63"
Oblong 4to., [32] pp.; pictorial cloth-backed boards
First edition, First printing
Printed Dust-jacket
First edition, First issue with jacket flap "$3.50"; rear flap with only three paragraph blurb; the binding spine ends uniquely shaped like a "butterfly" (with two diagonal indentations; all later spine ends less pronounced); noticeable off-registry of the pictures, evident here specially on the frontispiece (this was apparently resolved by the third printing); original dust-jacket (browned and slightly chipped)
Hilary Knight became the star of children's book illustrators after the success of "Eloise" and its three sequels (1955-1959). This presentation by Sendak is an acknowledgement of Hilary's prominence, inscribed just a few weeks after publication. Wonderful association copy.

Description:
New York: Harper & Row, 1963. Unbound. Near Fine. Measuring 56" x 42". Some light wear at edges and a few light scattered creases, near fine. A production page proof for Maurice Sendak's classic children's book, *Where the Wild Things Are*. The proof is printed on both sides and retains its original bright and vibrant colors. It comes from the personal archives of a distinguished children's book author and editor who worked closely with both Sendak and the book's editor, Ursula Nordstrom. While there is no jacket present to verify the issue points, as typical for a first edition of the book, the title page is conspicuously missing its Library of Congress identification number suggesting it was printed prior to securing one as required for publication. Further, we have only been able to locate one other known copy of page proof for *Where the Wild Things Are* in the Maurice Sendak Collection at the Rosenbach Museum, and it too lacks the LOC number on the title page. An amazing artifact from what is… Read more

Description:
[New York]: Harper & Row, 1963. Near fine in very good plus jacket.. Lovely first edition of the subversive Caldecott-award winner, in the rare original first-issue dust jacket. After illustrating nearly 50 other books, WILD THINGS was Sendak's first full-color picture book with his own text and illustrations. He took full advantage of that control to push the boundaries of the children's picture book genre. The story of a boy who gets in a fight with his mother and lets out his pent up feelings in a fantastical Wild Rumpus, WILD THINGS focused on the complex inner experience of little Max, acknowledging the reality that children deal with anger, frustration, and fear just as adults do. For this reason, the book was initially not well received: before the rise of New Realism in children's literature, many critics felt children's books ought to model ideal behavior rather than accurately reflect children's emotional experiences. The book made a splash from the very beginning, as Sendak expected it… Read more

Description:
New York: Harper & Row, Publishers, 1988. Signed limited edition of the 25th anniversary of this classic work, one of 220 examples specially bound and signed by Maurice Sendak with an original Wild Thing drawing by Sendak. Fine in a fine slipcase. An exceptional example. Hailed as "the Picasso of children's books," Maurice Sendak produced more than 85 books, of which Where the Wild Things Are is undeniably the most famous, being one of the ten best-selling children's books of all time. "Wild Things!' When Max's sojourn among them unfolded in kinematic splendor in 1963, adults trembled and children reveled. Reaching back into his own Brooklyn childhood, Sendak created the enduring child-hero Max, who overcomes his fears and achieves catharsis in a colorful fantasy tableau. The book was awarded the 1964 Caldecott Medal by the American Library Association" (NYPL Books of the Century 212). Basis for the 2009 film directed by Spike Jonze starring Max Records and features the voices… Read more

Description:
Harper & Row, 1963. Brown cloth spine over pictorial boards, 4-color endsheets, DJ design matching boards. Very interesting second issue, with LOC number on title page, Caldecott medal pasted, not printed, on and $3.50 price on jacket (code 40-80 / 1163). Back flap of DJ is the revised text, including mention of the Caldecott award. Book very good with aging to boards at edges, light pulling to front pastedown but otherwise clean. DJ also very good with one small open tear at front panel, wear and beginnings of chipping to DJ folds, light soil. Very few copies left of this vintage. Collectors will note that, since one DJ flap was revised and the other was not, this is possibly a unique first-and-a-half state copy. Unpaginated.. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good.
