Bound in green cloth with gilt lettering to the spine and front board. Some portions of front endpaper rubbed off, most likely from a bookplate removal. Binding leaning slightly, wear to spine, edgewear, soil, owner's name in pencil and tanned page, discolored spine.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Fair/No Jacket. Illus. by Illustrated.

This copy has the photograph of Mark Twain with shoulders nearly square to the camera and photographers name in the bottom left corner (Binding B, BAL; variant state, Gibson and Arms). Gilt stamped green ribbed cloth with red filling in the "M" of "My". Top edge gilt; 2 frontispieces plus 6 full page illustrations. The volume is bumped on the spine ends, corners, and bottom front edge, with additional wear and light fraying on the spine ends. The interior is lightly toned and a few leaves are edge chipped from being roughly opened (no text is affected).

Very good+ in its original light green cloth covered boards with gilt text on the spine and with red and gilt text on the front board and with the top edge of the text block gilt. An octavo of 8 1/8 by 5 3/8 inches with slight tanning to the cloth on the spine, a small dent to the fore edge of the front board impacted on the preliminaries to the first page of text in the form of a very small, barely noticeable dent and with a faint dampness stain at the top margins of pages 98 and the plate which faces that page. Without a dust jacket. 187 pages illustrated with a double frontispiece portrait of Twain from a photograph and a portrait of the author also from a photograph and six plates from engravings and photographs.
