London:: E Donovan, 1805. First Edition . Hardcover. Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. VG, 1st ed, 1805, 2 vols, 31 aquatint pls, complete.. In modern brown paper over the original boards, corners & edges bumped & worn. Both re-spined, ink printed titles to paper labels. Internally, Vol 1, 1805, [4] adverts, [2], frontis, [3], [iv-xxvii), [1], [1], 2-404 pp, 19 pls. Vol 2, 1805, frontis, [3], (iv-ix), [1], [1], 2-396 pp, 12 pls. Evidence of bookplates removed, top edges cut, remainder not, occasional light spotting & edge browning. But a very good set. (Folio, 139*220 & 138*222 mm). (Abbey 518. Graesse 426. Brunet 816. Allibone 513). Donovan, natural historian and artist, whose interest in natural history started with the collecting of shells and preservation of insects, probably before 1788. He was a prolific author and skilled artist who etched and engraved the plates for all his works. He became a fellow of the Linnean Society. See ODNB.
