About This Item
Basel: Petri, Sebastian. unbound. very good. Town plan. Woodcut. Image measures 9.25" x 13.75".

Beautiful birds-eye view plan of Colmar in the Alsace region. The Alsace region with its fairytale-like vineyards is known for its elegant Riesling wines, and Gewurztraminer wines. From German edition of Munster's "Cosmographia", circa 1550. German text on back. Some creasing and chipping along edges. Minor discoloration and expert repairs to centerfold. Professor Sebastian Munster (1488-1552) was a German cosmographer, humanist, theologian and scholar. His seminal work "Cosmographia" was published in numerous languages and is considered the most popular book of the 16th century. Furthermore, Munster is also credited with contributing to a revival of geography in Germany. This map is a fine example of his work.
