Antique copy of "THE CHESS OPENINGS, Considered Critically and Practically" by H.E. (Henry Edward) Bird. Circa 1870's (likely 1878 - there is no date of publication stated, but there is an inscription on a front end paper dated 1879); Dean & Son; London. The book features a 3-panel fold-out illustration at the front, as well as dozens of illustrations of "Noteworthy Positions Where Remarkably Fine Combinations Occurred" at the back. With advertisements on the front and rear end papers.
Condition:
The "O" in "Openings" on the front cover has faded; wear to the corners and to the top & bottom edges of the spine. Cracked front and rear hinges, and between pages 192 & 193. The pages are in very good condition - mostly clean with only a few random, light stains; inscription written in pen dated 1879 on front end paper...no other writing found. The fold-out illustration at the front of the book is firmly attached with tears at the outer edge of the last panel. 1/4" cloth tear at the bottom edge of the front cover.

This is a very rare bound volume of the 1st 66 issues of the publication "YOUTH'S TEMPERANCE ADVOCATE" from 1839 to the 1840's. The "magazine" was first published in 1839 (issues 1 and 2) and continued into the 1860's. The issues contain wonderful woodcuts throughout. In addition to the articles, the issues also include songs, cartoons and poems aimed at steering youth away from the consumption of alcohol, and pointing out the dangers and pitfalls of drinking. It is rare to find a single issue of this publication, let alone a complete run of 66 issues beginning with issue No. 1. This is a scarce, antique copy of "Taintor's Route and City Guides" - this particular guide is for the "Pennsylvania Coal Regions via Morris & Essex R.R." Published in 1867 by Taintor Brothers in New York. The guide features 4 color maps; the "Map of the Anthracite Coal Regions of Pennsylvania with Connecting Railways" is larger and folds out. "With sketches of the cities, villages, stations, scenery, and objects of interest along the route." There are illustrated advertisements at both the front and back. Please see the photos for the complete list of contents.Condition:The pages are in great condition - mostly clean and white with no writing and only some very sparse light foxing; tiny tear at the outer edge of page 29. The fold-out map is clean and firmly attached. The covers are present, but have detached from the spine and are separated along the right edge of the spine; creases at the left-hand corners of the front cover; there are a few tiny stain spots on the back cover.
