Speeches and Forensic Arguments: Complete in 3-Volumes

"Speeches and Forensic Arguments" by DANIEL WEBSTER, complete in 3 volumes. 1846; Charles Tappan, Publisher; Boston. Affixed to the frontispiece portrait of Webster in Volume I is the stem of a flower taken from Webster's grave in 1891. Additionally, a remark has been made in pencil below his portrait stating that "The above picture does not bear the slightest resemblance to Mr. Webster - it is a libel." Volume I contains 26 speeches; Volume II contains 22 speeches; Volume III contains 39 speeches.

From the Preface:
"...several of the speeches and addresses contained in this volume, possessing a character of more permanent and general interest, have been translated and published in most of the languages of Europe. And we are not without authority for saying, that they have been regarded, by men of elightened judgments and cultivated taste, as fine examples of forensic and popular eloquence. In the language of one of the most eminent statesmen of England, some of these speeches have been read in that country, with 'no less admiration of their eloquence, than satisfaction in the soundness and ability of their general views.' This tribute, coming as it does from those who are not apt to over-estimate the intellectual power or literary taste of our country, may be regarded by us, with an honest pride, as evidence of uncommon merit. As such, we offer this volume of Mr. Webster's speeches to our countrymen, in full confidence that they will sustain the high reputation they have acquired for political wisdom and true eloquence."

Condition:
Some light soiling and scuffing to the covers; the back cover of Volume I has some bubbling under the cloth; the top 1" of the spine of Volume I has chipped off; corner wear to Volume I. All volumes are tightly bound with no cracks and no loose pages. The text pages nearly appear unread - clean and white with no writing or stains; only a few pages were found to have a small, light foxing spot. Each volume has a previous owner's bookplate affixed to the front end paper (the bookplate in Volume I is torn at the bottom-right corner, and the end paper has a 1" tear). Name written in pen on the front end paper of Volume I. The stem of a flower taken from Webster's tomb in 1891 has been affixed to the frontispiece of Volume I; below the frontispiece are 5 lines written in pencil describing how the frontispiece portrait "does not bear the slightest resemblance to Mr. Webster - it is a libel." Overall the set is in very good condition
