5 volume set. 2269 p. Includes illustrations.
The Harvard Universal Classics, originally known as Dr. Eliot's Five Foot Shelf, is a 51-volume anthology of classic works from world literature compiled and edited by Harvard University president Charles Eliot and first published in 1909.
Eliot stated that the elements of a liberal education could be obtained by spending 15 minutes a day reading from a collection of books that could fit on a five-foot shelf. The publisher P. F. Collier and Son challenged Eliot to make good on this statement by selecting an appropriate collection of works, and the Harvard Classics was the result.
The first printing was dark green leatherette. After that, the set looked as you see it here. This is 5 volumes from the second printing, the 1910 set. Brown boards with an impressed design on the cover and bright gold lettering on the spine. They are all 5 1/3 x 8, on fine thick paper (darkening). All have one full-page B&W photo or illustration facing the title page.
Volume 8 Nine Greek Dramas: Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides, Aristophanes Agamemnon: The Libation-Bearers, The Furies, Prometheus Bound, Oedipus the King, Antigone, Hippolytus, The Bacchae, The Frogs. 466 pages, Pristine Condition
Volume 16 The Thousand and One Nights There is a bookplate in this one and the spine has been taped. There are a couple of tiny faint marks on the cover, otherwise perfect. 460 pages
Volume 28 Essays English & American Thackeray, Ruskin, John Henry Newman, Matthew Arnold, Thomas Henry Huxley, Edward Augustus Freeman, Robert Louis Stevenson, William Ellery Channing, Edgar Allan Poe, Henry David Thoreau, James Russell Lowell. 485 pages, Pristine Condition
