Niles first published this book in 1825 with no account of Texas. In 1837 a chapter on Texas was added which greatly increased interest. See Howes N158. The 1837 edition has 5 maps and plates. This copy has 3 plates, no maps. Two volumes in one. The text block has been resewn and the book rebound in beautiful brown quarter leather and cloth. New end papers. Interior pages have moderate foxing but no vandalism. Overall very good condition and way less expensive than the 1837 edition you really want. Paginates complete: 1st volume 370 pages, 2nd volume 230 pages, engraved half title page plus three very cool plates. I believe the this is the second printing of the second edition but the scans are definitive so please decide for yourself. Please see scans of the book you will receive.

Description:
1780 softcover pamphlet in very good condition. Paginates: (iii)-viii, [2], (9)-101, blank, lacking the half-title (if it ever existed). Second edition. Pencil notes of prior book seller on title page, no other markings, creases or interior problems. Bound in quality laid paper wraps. A very nice copy. The paper is wonderful example of the paper making trade in 1780's London. Content is scathing satire and complaints about, among other things, the loss of the colonies. A nice copy. Please see scans of the item you will receive. Notes: This title may be found in the libraries of Thomas Jefferson & Benjamin Franklin. More Notes: This is how most books came from the printer and it was up to the buyer to decide on further binding. This appears to have never been bound.

Description:
First American edition of this book. Published by T. Allen, New York, 1792. Binding is fine. Modern half leather and marbled boards by Starr Bookworks. Interior is very good. Has a few stamps from New York Mercantile Library. Edges show foxing, interior is toned, occasional old creases, no vandalism, writing or other issues. Pages remain supple. Lacking old blanks, otherwise complete as issued. Lee was a British born career military officer who sought to lead the Continental Army in place of Washington. Lee is most famous now for his various hasty and leisurely retreats including being captured in his night gown by the British in 1776. After a prisoner exchange in 1778 Lee resumed command only to be court-martialled a few months later for insubordination. He must have had something going for him because he survived 30 years of military encounters where strategic withdrawal was not always an option. One of those characters that would be hard to imagine if he did not actually exist. See Howes L85. A… Read More

Description:
First edition, four volumes, 1909-1920, Washington. Overall very good condition in original bindings. Notable for the complete absence of library or ownership markings. The only marking I can find is an old pencil note on the front blank of volume 3. Includes bound in errata slips and a promotional leaf for the series laid in. The boards have some dings to the corners. Volume 3 has the most condition issues: shows the most outer wear with some stains on the edges and wear on spine and boards (see scans). Bindings are all sound, which I expect can be an issue with this heavy set. A quite decent usable set. Please see scans of the books you will receive.

There is mild to moderate foxing seen on the plates, very little in the text. Some occasional old corner folds. No writing, vandalism or other issues. Binding is sound. Paginates: blanks(2), map, (i)-(viii), (9)-82, blanks(2), 8 unpaginated plates. Original blind stamped boards. Back board shows considerably more wear than the front. The new map is on laid paper similar to that used in the book. An extremely scarce book. None for sale. Last seen at auction 1908. Sabin 461. WorldCat locates 18 physical copies. Please see images of the book you will receive. Notes: Author not identified however occasionally attributed to C. H. Burt. His name can be seen on some of the plates. I have more info on this if you are interested. Feel free to inquire. More notes: the quality of the reproduced map was limited by the mediocre source material.

1826 South America & MEXICO Revolution PERU Chile Simon Bolivar Guatemala

John M Niles was an important American politician who is mostly remembered for his historical account of South America and Mexico. First published in 1825, 'A View of South America and Mexico' describes geographical, agricultural, and commercial aspects of various Central and South American nations. Known as the first major description of the South American revolutions, this book was written primarily through a political lens. According to the DAB,
"Niles, a senator from Connecticut, combined considerable literary ability with his taste for politics."
This 1826 edition includes a Frontispiece portrait of Simon Bolivar.

The pages are white, crisp and clear of any markings. "This is a history of the visual arts produced in the geographical area that now constitutes the United States. Such a book is difficult to title. A History of United States Art sounds awkward and logically might even be construed to exclude the arts of the colonial period. Thus, with apologies to our northern and southern neighbors, I use the title A History of American Art, knowing full well that the terms America and the United States are not synonymous...." - Preface from A History of American Art
