About This Item

New York: G.P. Putnam, 1901. First Edition. Octavo. xvii, 474 Pages illustrated with photographic illustrations. In 1879. while serving as an ethnologist with the John Wesley Powell expedition to New Mexico, Cushing became interested in the Zuni (he requested a leave to study the Zuni in their pueblos. Powell granted the request. He began to study the language and was adopted into the Zuni tribe as Tenatsai (Medicine Flower). He began excavations in 1887 in Arizona's Salt River Valley opposite Hayden's Crossing. Both his knowledge of the Zuni cultures as well as his marvelous writing style led to this work being published after his death in 1900 to become one of the great classics of Southwest history and culture. Bound in green cloth, spine lettered and decorated in gilt, light wear to spine ends, cloth with a bubble spot on upper board. A very good copy.
