About This Item

London: Longmans Green & Co, 1894. 1st edition, 12mo, 321pp, frontis + full page line drawings and more in text by H J Ford, mustard boards lettered and illustrated gilt to spine; it's a 1st edition Jim but not as we know it - let's be clear about this, this copy borders on the awful, previous owner's name to half title, boards extensively soiled and worn about edges, extrems, spine hinges and tips, spine darkened to oblivion and a previous owner has attempted to clean it up with what may have been T-cut; not content with that he/she then went on to paint many of the illustrations in watercolour, not insensitively, but it might have been better if they hadn't really but there you are; however it does appear to be all there, and it does not disembowel itself into your lap every you open it. That's about all one can say really - it goes without saying this for some reason is one of the tough ones in the series; Poor/Fair Copy. First Edition. Hard Cover. Poor. Illus. by Ford, Henry J. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.

Synopsis

The Fairy Books, or "Coloured" Fairy Books is a collection of fairy tales divided into twelve books, each associated with a different colour. Collected together by Andrew Land they are sourced from a number of different countries and were translated by Lang's wife and other translators who also retold many of the tales. The collection has been incalculably important and, although he did not source the stories himself direct from the oral tradition he can make claim to the first English translation of many.First published in 1894, The Yellow Fairy Bookis the 4th volume in this series.
