About This Item

[Cross-Dressing] [WWI] Archive of three photos of women in military uniforms from 1919 to circa 1930s. Original black and white albumen on cardstock, measures 12" x 14". Pen inscription on the front dates "4-27-1919". Official photo studio mark at the bottom reads "Iloma, Chicago". The two smaller photos measure 2.5" x 3.25" and 2.5" x 4.25". The large photo shows a WWI era group of young women subverting gender roles while wearing suits and military uniforms. The photograph shows a group of 10 female born individuals posed around each other dressed in fashion popular for men at the time such as newsboy caps and three-piece suits while several of the other people are shown in doughboy campaign and officer uniforms, and one in the center in a US navy uniform and cap. Additionally, there are two smaller photos of women in military regalia. In these smaller photos, a young woman embraces two of her female friends while standing in front of an American flag, dressed in a 1910s-20s military uniform, in addition to a photo of a young woman and a middle-aged woman standing side by side in a garden in full 1920s military uniforms, possibly a mother and daughter. While women served as nurses many wars prior, WWI was the first American war where women became official members with roles outside of nursing alone. Photo is crisp and clear, with some minor edge and corner wear to cardstock. Photographs of gender expression this early are scarce and increasingly harder to come by.
