Amsterdam: Heinrich & Dietrich Boom, 1671. First edition in German. Small 4to, pp.[ii, engraved title], [vi], 392, [1, colophon], [1, blank], 11 plates. Bound in 18th-century quarter vellum over boards. Lower hinge split, lower board still attached to spine. Contents in very good condition. The first German edition of the travels of Fernão Mendes Pinto (1509-1583), who left Portugal as a young man to sail to the Far East. By 1541 he had reached Malacca, which he describes in great detail, together with the struggles of its ruler against Aceh. From Malacca, Pinto sailed to Hainan, and then along the Chinese coast. After several battles with pirates, Pinto's party made port at Ningbo, but were quickly expelled from the city. They travelled on to Nanjing and then Beijing, where Pinto was imprisoned for robbing an imperial grave. Sentenced to hard labour on the Great Wall, he offered his services to an invading Mongol army. He eventually reached Malacca, by way of a voyage to the Japanese island of Kyushu, in 1545. Pinto wrote this narrative in old age, spicing his youthful memories with a mixture of imagination and other travellers' narratives. Some elements of his own travels have been questioned, but many details are corroborated in contemporary sources, and the more fantastical details are readily recognised. These travels were first published in Portuguese in 1614 and proved enormously popular. Pinto's travelogue shaped the European idea of the Far East. By 1700 it had been published in six languages across nineteen different editions. Cordier BS 2068; Morrison II, p.334; Reiss & Auvermann 675. COPAC records a single copy at the British Library.

Description:
Amsterdam: Abraham Wolfgang, 1688 A fair copy of the first French edition of Richard Blome's guide to British interests in North America with 6 (of 7) folding maps. The 1st edition was in English and published a year previously. The maps for the French edition were redrawn close copies of those in the English edition, and 4 of the maps in this copy have Robert Morden's name on them. The guide is a nice pocket size and was popular, however, some of the mapping is a little strange - the map of New York is notable in that Manhattan is shown as a peninsula not an island. This copy is missing the map of the Mid-Atlantic States - "Nouvelle Carte de la Pensylvanie Maryland, Virginie et Nouvelle Iarsey". The book is in contemporary full leather which is very worn with cracked hinges and a delaminating spine. The boards are reasonably sound with some leather loss at corners and a small area on the front board. The endpapers are marbled. Contents: 2 blank; title; avertissement 2pp; Text 1-331… Read More

Henry Hammond [1605-1660] was a churchman, preacher, and Royalist sympathizer during the English Civil War. As a theologian, he produced several sermons and religious tracts, and compared texts of the New Testament in his book, "Paraphrase and Annotations Upon all the Books of the New Testament" [1653].

Description:
This small volume contains the potery of Claudius Claudiani, known as Claudian (c. 370-c. 404 AD). A poet of Greek origin who wrote in Latin, he has been considered the last significant poet in the classical tradition and was in particular known for his epigrams praising Romans in significant political positions, as well as his poetry on mythic topics. He was considered a poet of importance in the Middle Ages.
This edition of Claudian's works was published by Daniel Elzevier, a member of the significant Dutch publishing House of Elzevier, in 1677. This is an excellent example of the small editions for which the House of Elzevier was particularly well-known, measuring approximately 2.5 inches wide by 4.5 inches tall, and its contents accord with their focus on classical works as well as editions of the Greek New Testament.
This particularly edition of Claudian's poetry includes a life of Claudian written by Giglio (here identified as Lilio) Gregorious Giraldi (1479-1552) taken from his work on the… Read More
