Description:
London: published and printed by the author at 12 Warwick Square and sold by James Gilbert, bookseller., 1851. First edition. 8vo (24.5 x 16 cm), pp.63, [1, blank], [2, imprint], with 42 wood engravings in text, title with printed frame in red. Folio broadsheet (40 x 44 cm), folded and tipped-in at rear. A very good copy in original cloth by Josiah Westley. Slight wear to head and tail of spine. Broadsheet lightly age-toned, and torn on folds. A selection of excerpts from the 11th-century Bogu tulu, a Chinese catalogue of imperial bronzes in sixteen volumes, translated by the printer Peter Perring Thoms (1790-1855). Thoms believed that the majority of the vases were made of gold, and the mirrors of polished steel; his dissertation makes no mention of bronze at all. The wood engraved illustrations were done from blocks carved by A-Lae, a Chinese artist from Canton, and were shown at the 1851 Exhibition. This copy has a remarkable broadsheet, The Original Address presented to His Excellency Hwang, on… Read More

Description:
London: Printed for Awnsham and John Churchill, [1732]. Second edition in English, extracted from Churchill's Voyages, folio, pp. [iv, title and preface], 380. Lacking the two plates. A very good copy in old polished calf boards, recently rebacked, end-papers and page edges comb marbled. Boards a little rubbed and scuffed, text block tight and clean. Domingo Fernández Navarrete (1610-1689), a Dominican friar, served as a missionary in China for many years and was much opposed to the Jesuits' accommodation to traditional Chinese customs in the notorious Rites Controversy. His book, a valued and sympathetic account of China, first appeared in Spanish in 1676 and became popular through much of Europe, especially among those hostile to the Jesuits for its explicitly anti-Jesuit arguments (see Löwendahl 165). The present abridged translation was the first published English translation, appearing in Awnsham and John Churchill's multi-volume 'Collection of voyages' (1704).… Read More

The Hague,: Koninklijke Steendruckerij., 1867. Original chromolithograph, 31 x 44 cm approx. A very good example. Framed and glazed. Raden Saleh was born near Semarang in 1811. His uncle, the Regent, encouraged his early interest in drawing which was later stimulated by the Belgian artist A.A.J. Payen. He was taken to the Netherlands at the age of eighteen where he took drawing and painting lessons from Cornelius Kruseman, and later worked under one of the best landscape artists of the day, Andreas Schelfhout. He spent more than twenty years in Europe meeting many artists and notables before returning to Batavia in 1851. In 1847 he travelled to Algeria with Horace Vernet, the celebrated orientalist painter. The engraver, Carl Wilhelm Mieling, was born in Germany in 1815, and first worked as a lithographer and publisher in Rotterdam before moving to The Hague. His printing works became known for the quality of their products and he was granted the right to use the term 'Koninklijk'(Royal).… Read More

Description:
Halle : Lippert & Schmidt, 1846. First edition, pp.51, lithographed Persian text. An very good copy in modern half calf, cloth boards, interleaved and heavily annotated in both Latin and Persian in a contemporary hand, probably Spleith's. Title page foxed, and occasional spotting elsewhere. This first publication of the introduction to the seventeenth-century Persian dictionary Farhang-i Rashidi, completed in 1654 by the learned poet Abd al-Rashid (b.Abd al-Ghafur al-Husayni al-Madani al-Tattawi, d. 1658) and dedicated to Shah Jahan, was the first appearance in print of any part of the Farhang-i Rashidi. The introduction by al-Rashid was one of the earliest serious attempts to describe the grammar of Persian, and the subsequent dictionary, though not present here, is considered one of the most authoritative, reliable, and complete Persian dictionaries. Ludwig Splieth, a German orientalist, also translated the introduction into Latin but it was never published. COPAC shows 4 copies only in… Read More

London: Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme and Brown; and Black, Kingsbury, Parbury and Allen; sold by J. Booth, [1811]-1821. First edition. Three volumes in four, 4to (27.5 x 21 cm.), pp.xvi, 606, [6, notes], large hand-coloured folding map; xvi, 716; xv, 483; (485)-998. A very good set in contemporary embossed cloth, gilt titles on spine. Professionally re-cased, heads and tails of spines repaired. Old wax seals on spines. A remarkably comprehensive chronicle of the history of Islam from the death of Muhammad to the accession of Emperor Akbar, drawing on Price's own translations from Persian sources, particularly Mirkhand, Khandamir, and Abu'l-Fazl. This was the first such chronicle published in English, and contemporary reviewers noted Price's methodical scholarship and his history's ambitious span. As a clear narrative history, with Hijri and Gregorian dates conveniently printed in the margins, it had no contemporary equal and remained a foundational text for English scholars of Islam… Read More

Description:
Calcutta: printed by A.H. Hubbard, at the Hindoostanee Press, 1810. First edition, an extract from Asiatick Researches, Volume 11. 4to (27 x 22 cm), pp.[ii], (197)-292. A very good copy professionally bound in yellow morocco, with title page supplied. The first substantive published account of the Sikh nation. John Malcolm began to assemble materials for his history while serving with British forces in the Punjab in 1805, noting that "English writers, none of them had possessed more than very general information regarding this extraordinary race..." Malcolm made his own observations and notes in the Punjab, and acquired a number of Sikh manuscripts. When he returned to Calcutta, he interviewed a Sikh on his religion, and acquired a number of English translations of Sikh religious and historical texts from John Leyden. The demands of Malcolm's duties prevented him from compiling a full history, but his briefer text effectively glosses the period from the birth of Guru Nanak in 1469… Read More
