About This Item

Newtown, Powys.: Gwasg Gregynog, 1988. Limited Edition . Cloth. Near Fine. Folio - over 12 - 15" tall. HERMES Gertrude. 1988, Ltd ed Gregynog Press. With extracts from Gilbert White. Introduced by William Condry with a postscript by James Hamilton. No inscriptions etc, (x), 30 pp, 6 pls, 355*240 mm, printed on the Hedelberg Cylinder, part of the title, headings and marginal notes in brown, bound by Smith Settle, in quarter fawn cloth, gold rule, with brown on cream patterned boards, titled in gold on the spine, this is number 1 of 200 ordinary copies, then there were 15 unbound copies and 25 specials. The 6 wood engravings by Hermes are stunning to say the least and thought by many to be among her very best prints, and published here by arrangement with the NLW for the first time. (Esslemont Hughes 19) Hermes, Gertrude Anna Bertha, printmaker, sculptor, and designer, moved with her husband, in 1930 to Montgomeryshire, where Hughes-Stanton had been appointed wood-engraver to the Gregynog Press. The press also contracted Hermes to engrave for them, but their production was frustrated by her inability, through deep unhappiness, to complete wood-engravings for A Natural History of Selborne by Gilbert White, and the edition never appeared.
