Heinemann,, [1966-88]. 8 vols., roy. 8vo., First Edition, with 7 portrait frontispieces, titles in red and black, very numerous plates, and many maps and genealogical tables (a number folding); red cloth, gilt backs, red tops (a few tops unevenly faded as usual), a remarkably bright, crisp, clean set in unclipped dustwrapper (wrapper of first volume chipped at headband). ALL WRAPPERS ARE THE PREFERRED SOLID COLOUR ISSUES OF THE UNIFORM EDITION. The set comprises: Vol. I: Youth 1874-1900 (1966); Vol. II: Young Statesman 1901-1914 (1967); Vol. III: 1914-1916 (1971); Vol. IV: 1917-1922 (1975); Vol. V: 1922-1939 (1976); Vol. VI: Finest Hour 1939-1941 (1983); Vol. VII: Road to Victory 1941-1945 (1986); Vol. VIII: Never Despair 1945-1965 (1988). Arguably the most important official biography of the twentieth century. The first two volumes were compiled by Winston's son Randolph; following his death in 1968 the torch passed to (later Sir) Martin Gilbert who passed the majority of his career completing the mammoth task.
