A rare and highly sought-after western stereoview showing a group of Ute males in front of the photographer's studio on Pike's Peak Avenue in Colorado Springs circa 1875. Most of the men are holding weapons; one of them has both a Maynard Carbine (the first one with a folding sight) and a Colt Model 1860 army revolver. This stereoview is from the collection of Robert N. Dennis, who was one of the most important stereoview collectors in the U. S. The New York Public Library's "Robert N. Dennis Collection" includes more than 70,000 stereoviews from his collection, many of which can be viewed on the library's website. The albumen prints are clean and bright, with very good contrast. Decorative engraved double-page title, statistics table, and 92 numbered double-page maps. At the rear are an additional 6 double-page maps of the continents, and two large folding maps of France and the two-hemisphere Mappemonde. Bound at the rear is a final map, a single-page Carte Speciale, of the war in Italy, dated 1859. Almost all maps have contemporary colouring in outline. Some chipping at lower spine, a bit of wear along upper hinge, inner front hinge cracking, an attractive very good copy in general. A complete copy, 101 Maps in all, plus the decorative title.

Tor House, Carmel, California, 1939-1947. Includes two 2-page letters, six half- to full-page letters, and 12 postcards. All are entirely handwritten and quite legible. Nineteen are to Robert Gros; one is to a Mr. Getz. They cover a wide range of topics including social events, invitations to visit, acknowledgements for items received, travel plans, WWII concerns (for sons Garth and Donnan), family trips for Robinson's readings, the "new" play (MEDEA), and Una's own medical concerns. Robert R. Gros (1915-1997) was a corporate executive and government adviser on international affairs. He twice rode the military airlift supply operations into blockaded Berlin after World War II, served several U.S. presidents and was personally commended by President Dwight Eisenhower in 1956 for his services to the American Council on NATO. Altogether very good to near fine.
