Rider Haggard, a popular author of adventure novels and a pioneer of the 'lost world' genre. The story follows a young man called Ruper Ullershaw who, after the suicide of the women he loves and promising his mother to always 'follow the way of the spirit, not that of the flesh', spends 11 years soldiering in India and Egypt.
