About This Item

London England: Routledge & Kegan Paul, 1962. Hardback. First Edition. Message to previous owner to inside cover. Wear and tear to edges of D/J. Small piece of D/J. missing from bottom edge of spine. Browning to spine. Price clipped to D/J. The author of this richly entertaining book remarks that from nearly all society history and biography one third of the story is missing. This book sets out to fill the gap - a gap of about eight hours in every day, hours which need by no means be uneventful or without significance. To venture thus upstairs is to satisfy more than mere keyhole curiosity. No human subject can be seen steadily and seen whole, without a glimpse of the room where he is conceived, is born, makes love, and dies. The very attitude in which a man lies abed can reflect his attitude to life - compare the monarch propped up stiffly in his lit de parade with the beatnik flopping prone on his 'pad'. The history of the bed is interwoven with the historial of social, sexual and sainitary attitudes, of architecture and building, of interior decoration and furniture. The illustrations, of which there are over two hundred, are very closely integrated with the text. They include many delightful 'bygones' never before reprinted. Illustrations. 360 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions, Reference books ,and all types of Academic Literature.). First Edition. Cloth. Very Good/Fair. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" Tall Octavo. Hardback.
