About This Item

Cambridge, MA: Nathaniel Dame & Company, 1967. Limited edition of 130 copies. This is book number 12. The "12" is inked in by hand. Signed and dated on the fep by co-author Mignon Rubenovitz (also on fep pencilled notation and price.) Rabbi Rubenovitz died prior to the publication of this volume. 8vo size hardcover, dust jacket in faux buckram covered slipcase. Cover underneath dust jacket is a rich mahogany color embossed in a maze pattern; 295 crisp, clean pages in excellent condition. From dust jacket: "How did it all begin? Conservative Judaism, The United Synagogue of America, Religious Education for Jewish Youth, Hadassah, the Jewish Women's League...where did these and many other groups and programs come from? The story is told in a vividly human account of fifty years of devoted labor by a rabbi and his wife dedicated to spread the gospel of Conservative Judaism and Zionism throughout New England... It began after the turn of the century, when Rabbi Rubenovitz came to Boston to accept the pulpit at the first Temple Mishkan Tefila in Roxbury. So many of the facets of synagogue life which are accepted as routine today, came only after the forceful and deliberate effects of this dynamic minister. The decorous service with organ and choir, spiritually and meditatively magnificent, is the result of many long, hard discouraging battles between laymen who remained static and a rabbi who had foresight and vision... with Rabbi Rubenovitz throughout every minute of this glorious half century, was his equally brilliant wife and help-mate, Mignon. Her contribution to this book is replete with marvelous little nostalgic anecdotes - sometimes light-hearted, sometimes said, but always remarkably human..." Gilt titles on spine underneath dust jacket are rubbed. Inside of dust jacket is tanned. Bottom spine of dust jacket and corner tips of jacket are chipped. Sleeve has edgewear and small bump to top corner and spine. Penciled price on fep. Quotes are for illustrative purposes only and remain the property of their copyright holders.
