About This Item

First American Edition; A Near Fine book in a Very Good dust jacket. SIGNED by the author on a card affixed to the front free paper. An outstanding copy of this first edition printed in English; originally published in French, the play debuted on stage in Paris in 1953; translated by the author into English and published by the Grove Press in 1954. Subtitled "A tragicomedy in two acts", this play has been voted "the most significant English language play of the 20th Century". Signed copies of this book are very rare, the first US even more so; as of this writing, this is the only US edition that includes the author's signature currently on the market. This copy is in near fine condition with a square, tight binding, bright silver and gold spine lettering, and clean pages throughout; the book does show some light soiling to the exterior text block, mild residue to the front pastedown from a removed bookplate, and a discreet PO inscription to the 2nd free paper, else fine. Housed in an original, intact, very good dust jacket that is clean and bright but does show light tanning to the spine and folds, some moderate rubbing and chipping to the spine ends, edges, and corners, a couple of short tears to the front flap fold (one small circular tear at the mid-spine area and one at the spine foot), and one dark stain to the back panel (please see pics for flaws). Overall, a presentable and highly collectible copy, greatly enhanced by the author's elusive signature. Not price clipped ($4.75 intact), not remaindered, and not ex-library; in a fresh Mylar cover and will ship in a sturdy box.

Synopsis

Beckett's existentialist play portrays two men who are trapped in endless waiting for the arrival of someone named Godot. They spend their time bantering and conjecturing and trying to anticipate the time and method of arrival. "Nothing happens, nobody comes, nobody goes, it's awful?"
