[4]+viii+500 pages with folding engraved map frontispiece. Octavo (8 ¼" x 4") in period tree calf stamped in gilt on both covers with a quote from Virgil surrounded a laurel wreath, spine ruled in gilt, morocco lettering piece. First English edition.
Pierre-Raymond de Brisson was a sailor when shipwrecked off the coast of Senegal in 1785 and captured by natives. He was fortunate enough to escape his brief enslavement, and settled in Morocco. The folding map, of the northwest portion of Africa, is by M. de Laborde.
Condition:
The folding map, of the northwest portion of Africa has several tears, Joints cracked, lacking rear free endpaper, heal corners bumped and rubbed else about very good.
