1799 1st ed Stedman Narrative of Suriname SLAVERY Negro Revolt Torture

John Gabriel Stedman was an 18th-century British soldier who is primarily remembered for his book 'The Narrative of a Five Years Expedition against the Revolted Negroes of Surinam'. This book covers his time in Surinam while serving in the Dutch military who were assisting in the fight against escaped slaves.

'Narrative' is a thorough account of Suriname, not just describing slave networks. Stedman describes Suriname landscapes, plants and animals, habits of indigenous people groups, and even the effects of European settlers in Suriname. And while he also covers specifics of the voyage to Suriname, the bulk, and most important aspect of the work is the numerous first-hand stories on the horrors of slavery –torture, psychological and physical abuse, and forced personal mutilation.

This exceedingly rare atlas tome from the complete set includes 42 full-page and folding illustrations – views of slave torture, snake hunting, native costumes, animals, maps, and even the famed portrait of Stedman's love interest Joanna! The illustrations were engraved by P.F. Tardieu and are based on those from the first English edition. It includes many Stedman originals as well as those from William Blake.
