About This Item
Leipzig: Bernhard Tauchnitz, 1858, 1859. Hardcover. Good. 4 vols. in 2. Tauchnitz's Collection of British Authors Series: nos. CCCCXXV, CCCCXLI, CCCCLXX, CCCCLXXVII. 318, vi, 318p.; vi, 324, 310p. 16 cm half leather with marbled boards. Leather detached from spine of vol. 2. Inscriptions on half-title pages and occasional marginal penciling but very minor. Text unmarked.
The first Baron Tauchnitz, Christian Bernhard (1816-1895) began this publishing firm, providing English-language editions to Continental European readers. What was innovative was that his editions were produced with the legal consent of authors and publishers in England and the Americas. With copyright secured, he was able to produce books of a much higher quality than the cheaply produced black -market versions that were his only competition. The paper wrapper were designed so that readers could have them bound to their own preference later. This set of Thackeray's Virginians would have been sold separately and in paper wrappers but a previous owner had them bound into two volumes. While in need of some repair, the book remains in good reading condition.

On Aug 12 2016, a reader said:
This book is a sequel to Henry Esmond and I would recommend reading that book before reading The Virginians.I especially liked Thackeray's perspective of comparing his present time(1859)with the mores of 1756.This enabled me to compare1959 with 1859 and 1756.For me ,it was an extremely enjoyable read, one that I feel actually helped make me a little smarter.
