Woodstock article is torn, chipped, and creased with attempts at tape repairs. A forum for those involved in various creative activities, the magazine ran from 1966 to 1970. In this issue: "Crisis at the National Film Board" with Drew Gillies, the second annual Nihilist Banquet including addresses to the General Assembly of the Nihilist Party of Canada, a literary supplement (incl. Moderate wear to jacket spine ends, a little faint soiling to rear panel. Small mark on lower text block edge. Bottom rear corner bumped. The first of the author's three books to win the National Book Award begins with the famous opening line "I am an American, Chicago born ..." Bellow soon found a receptive audience for his new energetic style. The ciritic Irving Howe noticed the "free style" manner and called it "the first major new style in American prose fiction since those of Hemingway and Faulkner." Both Time magazine and the Modern Library board named it one of the hundred best novels in the English language.

Tobias Smollett, in the preface to his first novel, The Adventures of Roderick Random (1748), acknowledges the influence of Le Sage's L'Histoire de Gil Blas de Santillane on his work. By far the most successful of "useful and entertaining" romances, Smollett writes, Gil Blas describes "the knavery and foibles of life, with infinite humour and sagacity." Dark stain on front cover of Vol. 4. Endpapers have ownership labels (Captain Tait, R.N., Katharine Elsie Biggs, F. R. P. Forrest, Edinburgh) and other label residue. Some staining and foxing, especially endpapers. Slight thumbing throughout text. A few pages show signs of dampness. Neat little volumes in need of some TLC. Lesage's picaresque novel "Gil Blas" is set in Spain but is almost certainly a satire of his own early 18th-century France.
