About This Item

Boston: Little, Brown & Co., 1924. 8vo. vi, 299, [1] pp. Illustrated title page, colour frontisp., 5 colour plates. Pictorial blue publisher’s cloth, cover art by Preston of the Queen of Fairy drifting towards the end of the garden, illustrated endpapers (minor spotting & soiling to cover, dustsoiling, edgewear), still VG- copy. First edition of this surprisingly uncommon illustrated fairy story by the Canadian author, who edited a children’s page in a Montreal newspaper before World War I, and set against the backdrop of the “Valley of Color-Days” over the Rockies and lay between them and the Selkirks. Preston (1888-1958) was a noted American artist and children’s book illustrator based in Beverly Farms, MA, whose illustrations graced many publications of Houghton Mifflin and Little Brown, and her fairy illustrations draw from Robinson, King, Clarke, and Jessie Wilcox Smith.
