Fine in a fine dust jacket. Jacket design by Fred Marcellino. Translated from the Czech by Michael Henry Heim. Rare signed and inscribed. When "The Unbearable Lightness of Being" was first published in English, it was hailed as "a work of the boldest mastery, originality, and richness" by critic Elizabeth Hardwick and named one of the best books of 1984 by the New York Times Book Review. It went on to win the Los Angeles Times Book Prize for Fiction and quickly became an international bestseller. It was adapted to film in 1988, directed by Philip Kaufman, starring Daniel Day-Lewis and Juliette Binoche.
Synopsis
The Unbearable Lightness of Being (1984), by Milan Kundera, is a philosophic novel about a man and his two women and their lives in the Prague Spring of the Czechoslovak Communist period in 1968. Although written in 1982, the novel was not published until two years later, in France; the Czech: Nesnesitelná lehkost bytí and French: l'Insoutenable légèreté de l'être titles are the more common worldwide.
