Dust jacket is price-clipped, with light shelf wear including a few short chips and tears. A collection of essays, articles, broadcasts, and miscellany. Organized into two parts. Part One, The Second Darkness, written during World War II focusing on Anti-Semitism, Nazis, Liberty, Censorship, and other topics. Part Two, What I Believe, was written during the same period, "but its climate is ethical and aesthetic" (prefatory note).
Synopsis
Essays that applaud democracy's toleration of individual freedom and self-criticism and deplore its encouragement of mediocrity: "We may still contrive to raise three cheers for democracy, although at present she only deserves two."
