About This Item

London: Andrew Melrose, 1911. First Edition. Octavo. 431pp., illustrated with black and white photographic images, maps and diagrams. This is the first work which gives a comprehensive account of police administrative work during the growth of the Commonwealth. This is not a record of a corporate regiment, much as the Royal North-Weesy Mounted Police of Canada but mostly the police services of six separate States. A great deal of the valuable historical matter was destroyed in the past, and this can never be replaces. This is only from contemporary sources that the author was able to fill in the picture. The author touches on several subjects, cattle killers, the rush for gold, the aborigines, the bush-ranging days and more. A very nice copy bound by Spotiswoode in a prize binding iof3/4 blue polished calf over light blue cloth centrally stamped in gilt, raised bands with compartments ruled, lettered and decorated in gilt, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt, scattered foxing to fore-edges, given to a student of Eton in 1913.
