New York: Marston Remedy Company, 1905. Revised Edition.
16mo (6 3/8 x 4 1/2 inches; 162 x 113 mm), 32 pages, in stapled wrappers (soft cover).
Pamphlet from a company offering "medicated" suppositories and contraptions that purportedly treat men's sexual, nervous, and urinary disorders.
One "treatment" involves cocoa butter. "The suppository now glides into the rectum with the most perfect ease by means of a little pressure from the finger, and, which is often important, this method of rectal treatment leaves no traces to excite the curiosity of servants or others." (page 10).
While most of the "treatments" involve suppositories of one kind or another, the company also offers devices to relieve men's suffering (illustrations helpfully included). There's "Dr. Curling's Varicocele Truss," which supposedly treats pain in the scrotum. This, we're told, is preferable to surgery. "Several surgeons have been assassinated by patients whom they have thus made hoplessly (sic) impotent." (page 23).
There's also Marston's Urethral Tapers, pencil-like devices that "soothe, heal, and, at the same time, destroy all germ life. They medicate the entire canal, never stain the clothing, and are rapid in action." So convenient you can carry them in your pocket. (page 27).
Marston Remedy Company was a defendant in a number of court cases. "Marston Remedy Company was owned by H.D. Van Leuven of New York. The company's advertising methods proved so outrageously fraudulent -- even for the period -- that in September 1906 the Postmaster-General denied the company the use of the U.S. mails." (An Annotated Catalogue of the Edward C. Atwater Collection of American Popular Medicine and Health Reform, Vol. III, Supplement A-Z, page 479.)
OCLC shows a single institutional holding of this pamphlet, at the University of Rochester, home of the Atwater Collection (the Atwater copy appears to have been published earlier than our copy). Yale has a copy under the same title but by a different publisher and with double the page count of our copy or the Atwater copy. RARE.
CONDITION: Light soiling to wrappers and heavy toning to pages. Very Good overall.

Description:
1852 softcover pamphlet discussing the downside of tobacco. When I got this the cover was off. Volume has had some restoration: cover is backed with matching paper and is reattached. Paper and binding are fragile but overall readable with a gentle touch. Primary defect is the corner off the front page. Interior has foxing and stains but no vandalism. I think the author comes out of the same group that published Solomon Spittle (which I also have listed). 1852 is the first year this was published but this is titled "Fourth Thousand" so this is an early printing. Has 8 plates that are included in pagination. 179 pages, complete as issued. An uncommon item generally found in poor condition. This is decent not great (which sometimes is the best you can do). Topic is health problems of tobacco. Discusses addiction, acute toxicity, chronic health problems including heart and lung disease as well as problems of second hand smoke. Feel free to inquire. Please see scans of the book you will receive.

Description:
The three letters indicate Steve Allen's more serious side on issues of religion and philosophy. The collection on Steve Allen's letterhead includes (1) a type one-page letter signed to Donald K. Sharpes on September 7, 1959. Allen explains his intent in the articles in Look Magazine was to shock Christians into realizing their hypocrisy. (2) a letter of November 27, 1959, where he explains he has digested the contents of his previous letter and he intends to answer with a fuller communication; and (3) August 2, 1960, where he provides a long two-page typed letter his response. He explains that he is a neighbor of a philosopher or a scientist, but he believes man has a soul. He is puzzled by the horrors of creation such as children born on occasion without a brain or other deformities. Do these little beings have souls? He goes on to say that his autobiography Mark it and Strike It will be published in a few weeks which will mainly deal only with the trivialities of his television career. He closes by…

Redlands, California: Pure Gold, [1955]. Stapled wraps. Very good. [12p.] Small chips to wrap edges. The Mutual Orange Distributors (MOD) was founded in Redlands, California, in 1906 as a cooperative marketing association representing citrus growers in California. Within a few years, the coop included citrus growers in western Arizona. In 1955, MOD changed its name to Pure Gold, originally the brand name for fruit grown by the approximately 2,500 MOD growers. Sunkist took over the Pure Gold trademark when the co-op closed in 1987 due to housing developments replacing the citrus fields and the shrinking number of packing plants. This booklet explains the history of the citrus-growing culture in California and Arizona and provides information on the variety of oranges, lemons, and grapefruit grown and their cultivation and packaging. A map on the back shows the regions represented by the Pure Gold cooperative. Scarce, none located in OCLC. B&w illustrations and halftone photographs. (11"x8-1/2")

On his mother's side, he was a descendant of Thomas Hastings who came from the East Anglia region of England to the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1634.[1] Adams received his early training in the Amherst, Massachusetts public schools and Phillips Exeter Academy. He graduated from Amherst College in 1872. In 1873 Adams traveled to Europe to study and write. In 1874 he then moved to Heidelberg, Germany to pursue the Ph.D. degree. There he was influenced by Johann Gustav Droysen and Johann Kaspar Bluntschli, the latter also becoming his mentor. Heidelberg did not then require a thesis from its doctoral candidates, instead it required an oral examination, for which he chose political science for his major field (Hauptfach), with two minors… Read More

Description:
[no place, but Cleveland, OH], 1959. Staplebound. Very good. Octavo, 4pp. Side-stapled with decorative ribbon added. Mimeographed cover and contents. Very good, with some creasing to covers. There is pen and pencil writing internally, and with the numerous corrections to dates and times, we presume that this program was used to draft the program for the coming season; that is, the corrections to dates, times, sponsors, and the league officers are indicated so that the new season's program will be updated. We could find no information about the "Queen Pin League," but it clearly seems to have been an all-women bowling league in the Cleveland area (with all Cleveland city businesses as sponsors). A light pencil drawing on the rear cover might be a mock-up for a new cover design. Highly ephemeral piece of Cleveland women's bowling history.
