A Treatise on Gunshot Wounds by Longmore, Sir Thomas (1816-1895) - 1862

The classic work on gunshot wounds which became the major reference work during the Civil War and was the reference work used nearly two decades later after the assassination attempt on President Garfield. Since the author had been in many of the British wars, he had seen firsthand the types of wounds caused by gunshot from grapeshot and musket balls to the variations between the Enfield and Whitworth rifles. He proceeded to note the injuries to all parts of the human body and how to proceed with relative safety in extracting the balls and the instruments used. He also deals with the use of chloroform. He became the Surgeon to Queen Victoria and his work on gunshot wounds is referred to in the Lancet throughout the last part of the 19th century with his obituary appearing in the British Medical Journal (October 1895) issue. This copy belonged to Dr. J.H. Hunt with his stamp and his signature. He was a Brooklyn physician who was a leading speaker at Medical Societies in the last quarter of the 19th Century. Bound in black flexible leather ruled in blind, front free endpaper had been repaired by adding to a stub, edges of binding a bit rough. A very good copy.
